Design team taps WKU student

A college senior from Western Kentucky has been selected to work on a global design project to create a wind-powered water purifier to benefit impoverished areas that lack electricity.

Zach Pearl, who is studying mechanical engineering at Western Kentucky University, is part of the five-member team contributing to the project from around the world.

"Something like this could possibly be used where there isn't a safe source of drinking water," Pearl said. "This could save lives."

The research is still in early stages, he said, but the group is using computer-generated conceptual drawings to examine the possibility of harnessing wind power.

It's not Pearl's first attempt to design a water purification system. Last year he was part of a team that created a water purification system powered by pedals on a bicycle.

Government cuts budget on backs of poor

Calling Korea "a failure" is inaccurate. Our armed forces were sent over there to defend South Korea from being over run by North Korea, not to reunite the two. Also, saying that the "liberals stopped us from winning" is absurd. With the horrors of World War II still fresh in our memory, fighting a prolonged and bloody war against the massive Chinese army in order to win would have been morally reprehensible and politically impossible. Finally, his claim that liberal ideology has caused "pain," "suffering," "death to innocents," and "costs lots of money" is illogical.Liberals freed the slaves, ended apartheid, passed civil rights laws, ended child labor, gave women the right to vote, ended abusive working conditions, made our food safer, our air cleaner and our lives better. Conservatives tried to stop all of those things.

Pairings: Potstickers to match Pinot Noir bring properity for the ...

In China, red is an auspicious, lucky color. It is also the color for Chinese New Year. The 2008 Lunar New Year (the Year of the Rat) began yesterday, so this week's wine - Carneros Pinot Noir - is a perfect fit.

Pinot Noir, one of the most food-friendly reds around, gets a pairing boost from Carneros' typical characteristics: moderate weight, red fruit and zingy acidity. Add generally lower alcohol levels (around 13.5 to 14 percent) and it's a red wine fit for many Chinese dishes, including those with a hint of chile heat.

Cherry, red raspberry and strawberry fruit aromas and flavors will support but not overpower Chinese ingredients like oyster sauce, soy sauce and fermented black beans. The contrast of salty-savory sauces to tart red fruit is a complementary match.
